This expression comes from The Analects, and is what Zixia (507-? BC), a disciple of Confucius (551-479 BC), said he had heard from others. Destiny is beyond one’s control, and ancients believed that the length of a person’s life was predestined. Confucian thinking held that humans should face life and death calmly as they are predetermined by destiny. What people should do is to constantly improve themselves morally during their life time.

Sima Niu sighed, “Others have brothers, but I have none.” Zixia said to him, “I have heard that life and death are predestined and that wealth and rank are predetermined by heaven. A man of virtue always does things conscientiously without making any mistakes and treats people respectfully and appropriately. Then people all across the land will be his brothers. Such a man thus needs not to worry about having no brothers.”
